Boomer’s face may bear the scars of a rough start in life, but his heart is as big as he is. Boomer came to Swedesboro Animal Hospital in a special way, and he had very special needs. He was featured on the television show Animal Precinct on Animal Planet, and he was in need of very special surgery to repair horrible wounds to his face.
When a good neighbor saw Boomer chained and suffering outside in the sun, skinny with no food or water, dying from pneumonia and the severe gashes on his face, he noticed that Boomer still managed to wag his tail whenever the neighbor would look out the window at the suffering dog. That neighbor called the police and saved Boomer’s life.
When the police came to rescue Boomer, they noticed he was a pit bull terrier, and like many people they were apprehensive. They felt sorry for him because he was so badly abused, and he had clearly been badly attacked by other, bigger dogs. The police couldn’t even see one of Boomer’s eyes because his face was so badly slashed.
Yet Boomer laid there and wagged his tail, happy as can be to see his saviors. When the police approached him, Boomer rested his head on the officers’ legs and did his best to tell them, “Help me, I’m really friendly!” And the officers knew right away they had to help him. They took him in their police car and brought him to the ASPCA, where the veterinarians helped him get past his pneumonia. The doctors said Boomer was one of their favorite dogs ever, just as happy and friendly as he could be – a puppy with that big old pit bull head but a heart of pure gold.
But Boomer needed a series of complex facial reconstructive surgeries before he could use his damaged eye and look normal again. And that’s where Dr. Magazu and his staff come in. Boomer was able to get the surgeries that he needed to rebuild and heal his face at Swedesboro Animal Hospital, and today he is back to his old happy-go-lucky self, romping around his back yard, carrying his favorite stuffed animal around, and saying hello to every puppy and person that he sees.
It’s kind of funny, but when people see Boomer for the first time – this big, strong pit bull with scars on his face – they still get a little worried at first. But Boomer’s big licks and constantly-wagging tail quickly tell them that he’s harmless as can be. And occasionally, someone will still recognize Boomer from TV, and of course Boomer doesn’t mind the attention!
